Sylvani

Kitty Pictures

I've just added some pictures to Sylvani's page. He's been with us for a year now. I'm pretty happy we adopted him. It's nice to have a cat around the house again.

Sylvani: crazy cat update

I've posted a few new pictures here. His silliest new obsession is the bath tub right after one of us has showered.

Playful Cat - update

Well, he regular climbs the cat tree, sometimes on his own, and sometimes because I've put his favorite string up there, and he generally wants to play all the time. He's very vocally demanding, and likes to be near us all the time. When we come home we often find him sleeping on our pile of shoes right by the front door.

Sylvani Update

It's strange to have a cat again after so long. He does all the things I expect a cat to do whether good or bad. He doesn't get into as much trouble as he could, but maybe that will just take time. And he isn't a lap cat. He will lay next to me for a long time, but not on me, even if invited. When I pick him up, he just sort of tolerates it.

He likes to lie on his back in odd poses, which I find amusing.

And he climbs the cat tree repeatedly and on his own now.

Oh, and he has claws of course, but this is the part that is unfamiliar to me. The two cats I've had before were declawed. Over the years I've been told what a terrible thing this is to do to an animal, and I feel guilty, so he'll keep his claws. I just have no understanding of how to teach him to be gentle with them, or not to use them on people and furniture. So yesterday when he scratched one of our nice wood and velvet chairs, I trimmed his claws. He didn't fuss, which is good. And he can still climb the cat tree just fine, so I think I will be keeping them trimmed, they are less sharp now.

1 week with a cat in the house.

He was timid but affectionate the first week. Didn't hardly want to come out of the bathroom where all his stuff is. But slowly he has been venturing out farther and for longer periods. He found the cat tree after a couple days and knew right off that it was for scratching on. But then it took him a couple more days to try climbing it. He made it half way up. He keeps staring up at it. I think he can see that it goes farther, but he's confused about how to get farther up, or out onto the ramps. I'm not sure how to help him figure it out. For now I'll just be patient and see if he can figure it out himself.

Then last night he joined us in the living room and fell asleep on the couch for the first time, and today I found that he'd been chewing on one of my plants. *sigh* It was inevitable I suppose. He really is a normal cat.

We seem to have a cat now

We've brought him home, but it hasn't sunk in really. Something to get used to again. It's been a couple years since I last lived with a cat and another year before that since I last had a cat of my own to take responsibility for. Michael and I have yet to work out who has what responsibility. But we have agreed on the name Sylvani. Now we get to see if the cat likes the name. Wish us luck.
